Start by knowing where your emissions come from. Then change the one or two things that matter most in your case, and check that the numbers move.

1. Find your footprint

Tap Carbon Footprint on Home and answer the questions on energy, transport, diet, waste and lifestyle. Answers save as you go, so you can finish over a few days. The app estimates your yearly footprint in tonnes of CO₂e and compares it with the average for India (about 2 tonnes per person a year) and the world (about 4.7 tonnes).

The estimate improves as you add real figures. Units from your electricity bill are far better than a guess.

2. Find your biggest lever

It depends on your household, so the app doesn't give everyone the same advice. Green Coach looks at your answers and names Your biggest lever: the part of your footprint that is largest in your case. For most Indian households it is one of these.

Electricity

Air conditioning, water heating and old appliances dominate. Setting the AC to 24°C, switching to LED lighting and using a solar water heater where possible are typically among the largest savings available.

Getting to work

A daily solo car commute is often the biggest single item for city professionals. Replacing even one or two days a week with the metro, a bus, walking or cycling makes a measurable difference.

Food

Food that is bought and thrown away, frequent meat meals and regular ordering in all add up.

Waste

Unsegregated waste that ends up in landfill releases methane. Separating wet waste and composting it, and selling dry recyclables, avoids most of that.

Before you commit to a change, use What if you cut this? in Green Coach to see what it would do to your total.

3. Make the change stick

  • Log your day in the Day log. A trip that emits less than your usual commute counts towards your offset.
  • Take on a challenge for 7 or 14 days. Committing to a change for a set period is the most reliable way to turn it into a habit.
  • Show your collector QR at pickup so your segregation is verified, and sell or donate what you'd otherwise throw away.

4. Check that it's working

Carbon Analytics shows your footprint and your offset over a week, a month or a year, along with your largest sources and your most effective actions.

Your offset is an estimate of the emissions your logged actions avoided. It is not a carbon credit. How we calculate your footprint and offset explains exactly what counts and why.
